Swine Flu 2: Panic Season
Husband: Did you hear that the swine flu will kill over 90,000 people in the U.S. this fall? And it will infect over half of the U.S. population?
Wife: That's very unlikely.
Husband: But I saw it on the news. They said it was going to be devastating.
Wife: It's just the Center for Disease Control's "Worst Case Scenario." The CDC has to explore the worst possible scenario, so they can plan for the contingencies. But that doesn't mean they think it's going to be anything like that. It's most likely going to be a lot less severe than our normal seasonal flu. The "Worst Case Scenario" is basically one step above dinosaurs and zombies attacking.
Husband: Oh. Well why doesn't the news say that?
Wife: I'm not really sure. Maybe it's because it's the "holy grail" of panic issues for the news media. A pandemic panic means people won't want to leave the house. Where the television happens to be.
